I’m Kieran Hicks, A games user researcher, that primarily studies the player experience. I’m currently a Senior Lecturer at Staffordshire University. I hold a PhD which explored juiciness in video games. My PhD approached trying to understand the intangible nature of juicy design from a human computer interaction and player experience point of view with my work involving running user studies and evaluating games. I also created with the help of some colleagues a framework for juicy design.
I’m always looking for collaborative projects in the study of juiciness in both academic and industry contexts so please feel to reach out for a chat.
My research interests vary; from exploring the effectiveness of Twitter as a games platform, the use of voice in online games and how we can ease initial anxiety, to using participatory design to created wheelchair-controlled games. Through this work I’ve used a blend of qualitative and quantitative methodologies to understand the effects our designs can have on the player experience. For examples of my work I recommend you check out my scholar profile.
In addition to my academic career I also previously directed a small independent games company Halflight Games and co-directed Hitpoint Games. I also work as a games design consultant with experience in VR design and public engagement games. Showreel.
